Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Despite erasing a four-run deficit and forcing extra innings, the Mighty Mussels were outpaced by the Hammerheads 10-9 in 11 innings Sunday.
With Jupiter (8-7) clinging to a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning and one out, the Mussels (8-7) loaded the bases after two singles and a hit batter. Jorel Ortega got Fort Myers a step closer, reaching on an error by the third basemen Ian Lewis that scored a run to make it 6-4. One batter later, Ricardo Olivar was hit by a pitch with two strikes to force in Dillon Tatum from third, making it a one-run game. The next hitter, Carlos Aguiar rolled a soft ground ball up the first-base line, to score the game's tying run.
After the Mussels pushed three across in the bottom of the ninth, Jupiters' Javier Sanoja was placed on second base as the automatic runner to begin the top of the tenth and advanced to third on a groundout. With the infield drawn in and one out, Cameron Barstad struck a ground ball to Mussel's second basemen Yohander Martinez who made a late throw to the plate to give Jupiter a 7-6 lead.
In the bottom half of the frame, pinch runner Luis Baez began at second base as the automatic runner. He advanced to third on a flyout and scored the contest's tying run on a wild pitch.
In the top of the 11th with a 7-7 score, Jordan McCants smacked a line-drive single to right field to bring home the automatic runner and give the Hammerheads their lead back. After a single and lineout, Jorge Caballero lined a triple past a diving Aguiar in right field to bring the Hammerheads' lead to 10-7.
In the bottom of the same inning, Michael Helmen drove in the automatic runner Martinez with a ringing double to the wall down the left-field line to close the deficit to two runs. The next hitter Ortega was hit by a pitch to place the game's tying run on base. After a sharp flyout to right field, Aguiar poked a line drive into right-center to bring home Helman making it a one-run ballgame. However, the Mussels' attempt to erase another deficit fell short as Ortega was doubled off at second on an Andrew Cossetti lineout to third.
Helman completed his fifth rehab game with a 4-for-5 effort, driving in two runs while also drawing a walk. The Triple-A utility man finished the week 8-for-19 with three doubles, four RBI and three walks (1.226 OPS).
The Mussels will enjoy a day off Monday before beginning a six-game series in Daytona Beach against the Tortugas. The Mighty Mussels Broadcast Network will not be covering the series, but all six games will be streamed on the Tortugas Baseball Network.
