
Muskegon Lumberjacks 2023 NHL Draft Preview

NASHVILLE, TN - The National Hockey League will host its annual player entry draft at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee this week. Starting with the first round on Wednesday at 7 pm ET draft-eligible players from around the world will wait to hear their name called by one of the 32 NHL teams. As a member of the USHL, a leading feeder of talent to the NHL the Muskegon Lumberjacks have numerous players around the organization with ties to the Draft.
Gavin McCarthy, D - Clarence Center, NY
A part of the Lumberjacks through the past two seasons McCarthy enters Wednesday's draft as the highest-ranked player in the Muskegon organization. Listed at 52 among North American Skaters McCarthy is a skilled puck-moving, right-handed defenseman. At 6'1, 181 pounds McCarthy adds good size to his excellent mobility while providing strong play in both the offensive and defensive zones.
Ty Henricks, F - Mission Viejo, CA
After coming to Muskegon via a trade during the 2022-23 season Henricks brought size to the Jack's lineup measuring 6'5, 201 pounds. Coming from a non-traditional hockey market in California Henricks has just scratched the surface when it comes to his development, and has the tools to be a strong offensive playmaker at the next level. Henricks finds himself ranked 102 on the Central Scouting List.
Joe Connor, F - Amherst, NY
Ranked 74th Among North American Skaters Joe Connor is coming off an eventful 2022-23 season. Playing the majority of the year with the Avon Old Farms Winged Beavers Connor won an Elite-8 Championship at the prep school level. Towards the end of the season, Connor joined Muskegon for 12 games immediately showing how his game translates to the USHL level with points in both of his first two games and 6 through his 12 appearances.
Hunter Anderson, F - Manhattan Beach, CA
Another mid-season acquisition by the Jacks Hunter Anderson Came to Muskegon by way of the Des Moines Buccaneers. In just 54 games with the Shattuck St. Mary's 18U team, Anderson recorded an astonishing 115 points on 59 goals and 56 assists. His excellent play with the well-known program helped him reach the 111th ranking by NHL Central Scouting.
Ryan Koering, D - Eden Prairie, MN
Drafted into the USHL originally by Tri-City Koering was traded to Muskegon during the 2022-23 season. Similar to McCarthy, Koering brings size and a strong puck-handling ability to the blue line, though is a bit bigger at 6'3, 185 pounds, and is a left-handed shot. During the season, Koering spent his second straight as the Eden Prairie High School Varsity team captain in Eden Prairie, MN. Koering's final ranking is 157 among North American Skaters.
David Klee, F - Castle Rock, CO
A player with USHL experience before joining the Lumberjacks David Klee joined the team during the offseason thanks to a trade that sent him from Waterloo to Muskegon. At 6'3, 187 pounds Klee is a strong centerman that can find the back of the net while imposing his will on the opposing players. Ahead of the draft, Klee was ranked 188th by Central Scouting.
Stephen Peck, G - New York, NY
Another member of the 2022-23 Avon Old Farms varsity Hockey team Stephen Peck was drafted by the Lumberjacks during the USHL Phase II Draft. After helping his team to a championship Peck showed scouts that he has what it takes to win and can help a team at the next level do the same.
The NHL Draft hosted by the National Hockey League and Nashville Predators takes place at Bridgestone Arena June 28th-29th. Round one starts on Wednesday, June 28th at 7 pm while rounds 2-7 begin Thursday at 11 am ET.
