Mudcats Trump Lookouts, 6-3

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Carolina starting pitcher Matt Klinker pitched a gem of a game to lead the Mudcats to a 6-3 win over the Lookouts in Friday night action at AT&T Field.

Both teams remained scoreless until the fourth frame when the Mudcats broke the ice with two runs. Jake Kahaulelio walked to lead off the rally and advanced to second on a one-out single from Eric Eymann. Carolina then found themselves with the bases loaded after Mike Costanzo walked. Dennis Phipps then ripped a ball in which third baseman Corey Smith made a tough catch ranging to his left, but a throw in the dirt to second baseman Jaime Pedroza led to two runs scoring for the Mudcats.

Kahaulelio hit an RBI single in the fifth to extend Carolina's lead to 3-0. Chattanooga finally entered the scoreboard in the bottom portion of the fifth frame. Eddy Perez led off by reaching second base on a booted ball by first baseman Eymann. Jessie Mier would eventually hit a two-out single to bring home Perez.

Carolina quickly countered in the sixth with three more runs. Dave Sappelt highlighted the rally with a two-run double Faced with a 6-1 deficit in the ninth, the Lookouts did not go away without a fight. Back-to-back walks to Scott Van Slyke and Trayvon Robinson began the inning. Tommy Giles then hit an RBI single in which he was thrown out on a close play at second. Jessie Mier followed with a single to bring home Robinson. The Mudcats then brought in relief pitcher Jordan Smith, who proceeded to close the door on the Lookouts and preserve the 6-3 lead en route to earning his sixth save of the season.

Matt Klinker (4-3) pitched seven innings to earn the win for Carolina. He yielded one unearned run on five hits and three walks, while striking out seven.

John Koronka dropped to 0-3 on the season for the Lookouts in the loss. He went 5.1 innings, surrendering six runs (five earned), four hits, and five walks. He struck out six in the losing effort.
