Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Jamie Milam tied a franchise record with four assists as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs rolled to a 5-1 victory over the Evansville IceMen Thursday night at the CenturyTel Center. The win puts Bossier-Shreveport back into second place in the Berry Conference at 23-19-2 heading into tomorrow night ¬â¢s rematch with the IceMen.
The ¬ËBugs opened up a 3-0 lead after one period and never looked back on their way to winning the first-ever matchup with Evansville. Milam assisted on all of the Mudbugs ¬â¢ last four goals in the game, while Shawn Limpright scored one and assisted on another in his 500th career game. James DeLory, David Rutherford, Brett Smith and Jeff Kyrzakos netted the other Mudbugs goals, two of which came on the powerplay.
The ¬ËBugs started quickly in the contest, building an early shot advantage and taking the lead when James DeLory created a chance in front and knocked in a rebound at 6:26. Another rebound goal followed 59 seconds later as Steven Crampton sent the rebound of a Jamie Milam shot to David Rutherford, who buried his 28th goal of the year to make it 2-0. Shawn Limpright tacked on another goal before the period was out, depositing a Jim Jorgensen rebound at 15:39 to extend the lead to 3-0. The Mudbugs outshot the IceMen 20-7 in the first.
Evansville got on the board with a powerplay goal in the first minute of the second frame as Damian Surma tipped in a long shot from Tom Galvin, putting the score at 3-1. The Mudbugs got that goal back later in the period though as Jamie Milam intercepted a pass at center ice and raced into the Evansville end before ripping a hard slapshot that was stopped by Jeff Harvey. Brett Smith then swooped in and wristed the rebound past the former Mudbugs goaltender at 14:39 to give the home club a 4-1 edge after 40 minutes.
Bossier-Shreveport sent 19 more shots on net in the third stanza and surrendered only five to prevent and Evansville comeback. With six minutes left in the game, Milam and Limpright combined to feed a pass into the slot for Jeff Kyrzakos, who fired it blocker-side past Harvey to provide the final 5-1 margin with his 13th goal of the year.
The Mudbugs set a new season high with 47 shots on goal in the contest, outshooting the IceMen 47-23. They also scored two goals on three powerplay chances, while Evansville finished 1 for 2. Brian Foster (9-9-1) stopped 22 of 23 shots and allowed only the one powerplay goal to earn his first victory since December 10. Jeff Harvey (8-5-0) made 42 saves in defeat for the IceMen.
The same two teams will face-off again tomorrow night at 7:05 at the CenturyTel Center in their second and final regular season meeting this year. Tomorrow night ¬â¢s game will also be our "Power the Cure" effort in conjunction with Willis-Knighton Health System as we spread awareness and education about head and neck cancer, which is usually associated with tobacco use.
