Arizona Sundogs News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Torrie Jung backed the Laredo Bucks to their second straight win with one of the CHL's strongest performances by a netminder this season, turning aside 48 shots, including 20 in the first period, in a 4-1 win Wednesday night at Tim's Toyota Center.

The Arizona Sundogs offered up a season high 49 shots on net but Jung continually denied quality scoring chances by the home team throughout the contest.

Morgan MacLean nearly picked up his first goal in a Sundogs uniform with just over 12 minutes remaining in the middle frame, cutting behind a Laredo defender and attempting to slip a backhand past Jung but the netminder cleared away the effort.

Jung denied a Cam Keith power-play chance in the second period's final minute, stacking the pads and kicking his left leg in the air as the forward circled through the slot, keeping his team even at one.

Rookie forward Patrick Schafer looked to regain a one-goal lead with a strong individual effort early in the third period, out-maneuvering Laredo players through neutral for a chance in alone on Jung but the goaltender turned away the attempt sending his club the other direction, resulting in Jeff Bes' first of two tallies in the third period.

The first-year pro also had some help from goal posts and crossbars. Schafer nearly earned his sixth goal of the year two and half minutes into the game, ricocheting a shot off the cross bar while Adam Smyth found a post early in the second period.

Arizona outshot Laredo 21-3 in the opening frame, matching a season-low for shots against in a period first set against the Bucks in Tuesday's third period.

Reaching the milestone of 800 professional games on January 8, Joel Irving accomplished another career mark Wednesday, tallying his 250th career goal to give the Sundogs a 1-0 lead 8:11 into the contest. Tyler Butler assisted on the achievement along with Joey Sides, extending his current points streak to three games.

Jeff Hazelwood recorded his third goal in two games at the second period's 12:22 mark to knot the score at one, calming a Chris Pontes pass in the low slot and wrapping a backhand around Doug Groenestege at the top of the goal crease.

Bes stretched his club's lead to 3-1 with a power-play marker midway through the final frame with a bad angle shot from the side of the cage that caught the stick of Groenestege and trickled across the goal line.

Hans Benson added a man advantage marker with six and a half minutes remaining in the contest.

The Sundogs finished 1-for-7 on the power play while the Bucks converted twice on six opportunities.

Arizona (17-23-5) closes out a season-long nine-game homestand Friday at 7:05pm against Laredo (16-21-6) at Tim's Toyota Center. Tickets start at just $12 and are available by phone at 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), online at www.GetTix.net and in person at the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office.
