Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

THE BOSSIER-SHREVEPORT MUDBUGS announced today that former WPHL Goaltender of the Year and Rookie of the Year Ken Carroll will be returning to the club for the 2002-03 Central Hockey League season.

Carroll, 25, was a big part of the Mudbugs President's Cup win in 2000-01 – when he was named the Western Professional Hockey League's best goaltender – setting team records in goals-against-average and save percentage. Both those records (1.76 GAA and 93.5 save percentage) remain Central Hockey League records.

"I am extremely excited to have Kenny returning to our hockey club," said Mudbugs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Scott Muscutt. "He was the premier goaltender in the Western Professional Hockey League two seasons ago and was a huge part of our championship season."

After attending training camp with the Vancouver Canucks (NHL) last fall, Carroll played the 2001-02 season in the East Coast Hockey League with the Jackson Bandits and the Reading Royals. He registered a combined 17-14-5 record with a 2.61 goals-against-average and a 91.4 save percentage. He was also selected to represent Jackson at the 2002 East Coast Hockey League all-star game in Trenton, New Jersey.

During the 2001-02 season Carroll was also called up to the Norfolk Admirals (AHL) on two occasions, playing in one game for the Chicago Blackhawks top affiliate. He allowed three goals on Oct. 21 in a 3-2 loss against the Lowell Lock Monsters – the Carolina Hurricanes developmental club. Prior to the 2000-01 season, Carroll attended training camps with the Minnesota Wild (NHL) and the Kansas City Blades (IHL).

"Kenny has been very, very close to making the jump to the American Hockey League level on several occasions over the past couple of seasons," said Muscutt. "He knows his position very well, plays well in big game situations and is a real benefit in the locker room and in the community."

In his only season with the Mudbugs, Carroll put together a league-leading 27-9-1 record with five shutouts. He also posted an 11-2-0 mark in the 2001 President's Cup playoffs with a record-setting three shutouts.

The signing of Carroll is the first off the off-season for the Mudbugs. More signings will be announced prior to the Central Hockey League meetings that will be held at the league headquarters in Phoenix from June 3 to 5. The Central Hockey League will be holding an expansion draft in Phoenix at this time, when the Laredo Bucks join the league for the 2002-03 season. Each of the CHL's 16-teams will be able to protect 15 players with Laredo selecting a total of five from the available players league-wide.
