Iguanas Charitable Foundation Formed

San Antonio Iguanas News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS...The San Antonio Iguanas announced today the launch of the Iguanas Charitable Foundation.
Iguanas hockey has long been synonymous with community support and now with the foundation in place, the Iguanas will be in a position to expand their contributions to local charities and organizations.
General Manager Rick Carden feels the foundation will give the team more structure as to what they are able to do in assisting charitable groups and organizations.
"It certainly is nothing new for the Iguanas to assist charities, but with the Iguanas Charitable Foundation we will be able to do so much more. Last season we played a part in assisting over 180 local charities and non-profit organizations and can now do more with the different programs available for those that may be a little more needy."
As a part of the foundation, the Iguanas will launch three new educational programs that will focus on youth reading and staying in school as well as other good qualities and characteristics that make students part of a winning team. The foundation will also use its resources to assist financially many different charity groups as opposed to just a few specific organizations. Last season the Iguanas, in conjunction with TotalCom, raised $1700.00 for the American Heart Association and also raised $2430.00 for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters through the Jesse James Leija Foundation.
Carden also sees the foundation as way of distributing assistance to many more different charity organizations and broadening the scope of the Iguanas efforts.
"The Iguanas have always played a part in assisting different non-profit organizations but have been some what limited to the various groups we worked with. With our foundation we will be able to do so much more financially and give many different groups more of what they need which is contributions."
Another key component to the Iguanas Charitable Foundation is the formation of Iggys Guardian Angels, which will donate tickets for Iguanas hockey games to various children's charities throughout the 2002-03 season. Local corporations who are a part of the Guardian Angels will contribute the tickets.
"So many San Antonio area children would love to take in a hockey game and who knows how an event like that might touch or open up their lives," said Carden. "I have had contact with numerous companies that are interested in contributing to different charities and are just looking for a creative way to do so. Iggys Guardian Angels gives them that opportunity."
The foundation will begin raising money as well as developing and implementing programs immediately.
