Muamba Selected First Overall in 2011 CFL Canadian Draft

Toronto, ON - (May 8, 2011) -The 2011 CFL Canadian Draft wrapped up earlier today after a total of 47 players were selected. The first overall selection was made by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers who drafted St. Francis Xavier linebacker Henoc Muamba.

Of the 47 players drafted today, 34 came from the CIS and 13 from the NCAA. The Calgary Dinos led the day in number of players selected with six, including two in the first round. Concordia, Laval and Western tied for the second most players selected with four. History was made with the first overall selection as Muamba became the only St. Francis Xavier player to be selected with the number one pick.

Today's CFL Canadian Draft was also busy with trades. There were a total of five trades involving 14 draft picks and three roster players.

By position, the offensive linemen led the way with 12 selections, closely followed by defensive linemen with 10 and receivers with nine. Linebackers followed next with four picks, defensive backs, running backs and kickers each with three, tight ends with two and one quarterback.

The teams with the most selections were the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts with seven. The Calgary Stampeders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers followed with six selections each. B.C. and Saskatchewan each had five picks and the Edmonton Eskimos had four.

The 2011 CFL season opens with RONA Canada Day Kickoff Weekend when the Grey Cup champion Montreal Alouettes host the B.C. Lions on Thursday, June 30 at 7:00pm ET on TSN / RDS. Opening weekend continues on Canada Day with a double header as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ivor Wynne Stadium at 6:00pm ET (TSN) followed by the Calgary Stampeders hosting the Toronto Argonauts at 9:00pm ET. RONA Canada Day Kickoff Weekend wraps-up with the Edmonton Eskimos playing the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium on Sunday, July 3 at 7:00pm ET (TSN).
