THE GAME
The Mountain Lions will open up their second season of play in the United Football League when they travel to Connecticut to take on the Hartford Colonials. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. (Pacific). The Mountain Lions were known as the California Redwoods last year when they played in San Francisco and San Jose so this is the inaugural game for the Sacramento franchise. This is also the inaugural game for the Hartford Colonials as they played as the New York Sentinels last season. The game will be broadcast nationally on the New England Sports Network and will air on KHTK 1140 in the Sacramento area.
THE SERIES
(Sacramento Leads 2-0)
The United Football League season will kick off in Hartford, Connecticut, as two franchises with new beginnings in new homes face off.
The Hartford Colonials and Sacramento Mountain Lions will meet for the third time this afternoon, but the first two meetings were under very different circumstances. Last fall, the Colonials were known as the New York Sentinels, and the Mountain Lions were known as the California Redwoods.
In the first-ever matchup of the two teams, on October 17, 2009 in San Francisco, California, the Redwoods defeated the Sentinels, 24-7. A 7-7 game at halftime, the Redwoods took the lead for good when running back Cory Ross scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Ross rushed for 121 yards on 22 carries in the game.
The two teams played again just 12 days later at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The result was the same, a victory for the Redwoods, 20-13, but it was a much more competitive game.
Key Matchup No. 1
Sacramento quarterback Daunte Culpepper vs. Hartford's defense.
Culpepper is looking to regain his Pro Bowl form while with Sacramento, and having a performance similar to the five-touchdown-pass game he had on opening day in 2004 would be a good start toward that goal. The Colonials' defense will try to stop that, of course, and will attempt to do so with an almost entirely new crew from the Sentinels defense that took the field a year ago. Only three regular Hartford defensive starters were on the New York roster last season.
Key Matchup No. 2
Colonials running back Andre Dixon vs. Sacramento's defense.
Dixon, a rookie, is looking to delight the Rentschler Field crowd today as he did for fans of the Connecticut Huskies in 2009, when he ran for 1,093 yards and 14 touchdowns. One of the more impressive numbers lost in the Redwoods' season last fall was the fact their rushing defense was the best in the league in both yards per game (86.7) and yards per carry (2.9) allowed.
Ross Excited for Opener
Mountain Lions running back Cory Ross, the leading rusher in the UFL last season, is fired up about today's game. "I can't wait to get out there and light it up," Ross said. "We are really going to open it up and spread the ball around."
