Philadelphia KiXX News Release
Philadelphia, PA, February 9, 2004 â The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today that Philadelphia KiXX defender Pat Morris and goalkeeper Peter Pappas have been honored with Player of the Week accolades for the seven-day period ending February 8; Morris was named the League's Defensive Player of the Week, his third weekly nod of the season, while Pappas was honored as the MISL Goalkeeper of the Week for the second consecutive week and a League-high fifth time in 2003-04.
Morris solidified the KiXX defense with a team-high nine blocks combined in the club's victories this past weekend. The 26-year old defender kicked-off the back-to-back set, rejecting four shots versus the Baltimore Blast on February 7, and then added a game-high five blocks versus the Milwaukee Wave at U.S. Cellular Arena on February 8. Morris also paced Philadelphia with five points on one goal and four assists in the two outings, highlighted by a three-dish performance versus the Blast. The Philadelphia native currently ranks second in the MISL with 55 blocks this season and is fourth on the team's scoring list with 21 points on 13 goals and eight assists. Morris, who was recently selected to his third consecutive all-star game, was previously honored as the MISL Defender of the Week for the seven-day periods ending December 28 and January 11, as well as League Defender of the Month for his performance throughout the month of January.
The Philadelphia University graduate was named to the All-Rookie team in 1999-00 and to an All-League team twice, 2001-02 and 2002-03. The five-year veteran finished his collegiate career fourth all-time in school history with 49 goals and 120 points. Morris was an All-State selection and two-time All-Catholic League honoree at his alma mater, Northeast Catholic High School.
Pappas posted a perfect 2-0 weekend, turning away 46 of the 53 shots he faced in two contests, lowering his goals against average to 4.38 (3rd MISL) and his save percentage to a League-best .776. The native of Toronto, Ontario recorded 24 saves on 27 chances versus Baltimore en route to 9-3 victory on February 7, and then stopped 22 of the 26 shots he faced in Milwaukee for a 5-4 win on February 8.
The 31-year old netminder, recently selected to his seventh consecutive all-star, now posts a 14-6 overall record, ranking first in save percentage and saves (304), third in wins and goals against average, and fourth in minutes played (1,204). Pappas was also named the League's Goalkeeper of the Week for the seven-day periods ending October 5, October 12, January 18 and February 1. He was cited as the MISL Goalkeeper of the Month in both October and January.
The eight-year veteran has been named to seven all-star squads, four of which he was selected to start, and five all-league teams in his career. Last season, Pappas received Player-of-the-Week honors three times (seven-day periods ending November 3, February 9 and March 23) and Player-of-the-Month honors for his play in the month of November. Overall in his career, the Philadelphia University graduate has received Player-of-the Week honors 16 times, as well as eight Player-of-the-Month citations.
Morris, Pappas and the rest of the KiXX return to action this Wednesday, February 11 to welcome their Eastern Division foe, the Cleveland Force, for the club's Ninth Annual School Day. The day proves to be an educational field trip designed for schools to enjoy an exciting, fast-paced soccer game, while participating in the club's "Goals for Success" educational program. Game-time at the Wachovia Spectrum is slated for 10:35 am ET with the action available live via webcast at www.pennlive.com.wmss.
