Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawks goaltender Cale Morris has committed to the University of Notre Dame and plans to join the Fighting Irish hockey program during the 2016/17 academic year, the Hawks announced Tuesday.
In just a half-season with Waterloo, Morris was voted "Most Valuable Player" by his teammates, an award which was presented during the club's season celebration Sunday at McElroy Auditorium. Prior to the Larkspur, Colorado, native's first appearance, the Hawks were 9-20-3 in mid-January. Morris has been in net for every game since being acquired from the Chicago Steel and has backstopped the team to a mark of 16-5-3 in that time.
"With Cale in net, our players know that an occasional mistake won't necessarily turn into a goal against, and that allows them to play their game with a little more freedom," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "Having a proven goaltender with a history of performing at a high level as the foundation for our 2015/16 roster is a great starting point."
During his brief tenure with Waterloo, Morris has been named the United States Hockey League's CCM Goaltender of the Week three times. His four shutouts are the most on the circuit. Morris' season marks for save percentage and goals-against average each rank among the top six in the USHL (92.1% - 3rd and 2.45 - 6th respectively). During a season-and-a-half with the Steel, he was 21-14-2 in 41 appearances.
Morris will follow former Black Hawk netminder Cal Petersen to South Bend. As a freshman with the Irish this season, Petersen was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie team. Former Waterloo forward Vince Hinostroza was Notre Dame's leading scoring during 2014/15 and signed with the Chicago Blackhawks at the conclusion of the season.
The Black Hawks' current roster now boasts 16 players who are committed to NCAA Division I schools.
