Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Big Iowa Finish

The final four Waterloo Black Hawks games during the 2014/15 season will be against opponents from within the state of Iowa. The sequence begins Friday when the Hawks host the Des Moines Buccaneers. Waterloo won twice against Des Moines when the clubs met three times during a six-week span in December and January. Then Saturday, the Sioux City Musketeers visit Young Arena. The Black Hawks broke through for their first head-to-head win against Sioux City, 6-2, the last time the teams got together on February 20th. The contests are Waterloo's final two matchups against opponents from the Western Conference this season.

Pouncing on the Power Play

Waterloo forward Brock Boeser notched his 14th power play goal of the season on Saturday during the Black Hawks' 5-2 win against the Bloomington Thunder. The North Dakota recruit's total is the most by a Waterloo skater since Tyler Barnes stacked up 14 in power play situations during 2009/10. Boeser's power play count currently ranks second in the United States Hockey League, behind Chris Wilkie of the Tri-City Storm. Wilkie and Boeser are also separated by just one goal for the overall lead in the category, at 32 and 31 respectively.

March, By the Numbers

Nick Swaney scored seven goals during March, helping the Black Hawks to a 5-4-1 record during the month. A little more than a quarter of Waterloo's 27 tallies came off of Swaney's stick, as the Hawks outdistanced their opponents by a cumulative total of 27-25. Brock Boeser accumulated a team-leading count of ten points, including seven assists which tied with Phil Beaulieu and Blake Hillman for the most on the team. In net, Cale Morris stopped 92.9% of the shots he faced while posting a 2.22 goals-against average.

Three "A" Day

One night after turning 20, forward John Wiitala had the highest-scoring game of his USHL career. The third-year Black Hawk assisted on three consecutive goals Saturday during Waterloo's 5-2 decision against the Bloomington Thunder. The effort included setting up the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goals. Over 163 regular season appearances, the Ohio State recruit has now recorded 27 goals and 30 assists.

Weekly Recap

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders jumped ahead to a 4-0 lead Friday at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, on the way to a 7-2 decision. Ronnie Hein and Nick Swaney put pucks in the net for Waterloo. Hein struck again on Saturday during a 5-2 win against the Bloomington Thunder, Bloomington's first ever visit to Waterloo. John Wiitala, Brock Boeser, Blake Hillman, and Phil Beaulieu each recorded multiple points during the win. It was the first game during a season-ending five-game home stand.
