Moose Split Week 5 With Penguins

The Manitoba Moose split their first series of the season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in Week 5 with both games decided in extra-time. The Moose dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to the Penguins on Thursday night but followed it up with a 2-1 shootout victory on Friday. Goaltender Daren Machesney backed the Moose for both games, while Sergei Shirokov scored Manitoba's only two goals last week.

Thursday, October 29, 2009: Manitoba 0, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 1 (OT) It was a goaltending battle on Thursday night, as both Daren Machesney and John Curry were flawless through 60 minutes of play to force overtime. A mere 39 seconds into the fourth period, Penguins winger Ryan Bayda notched the only goal of the night to confirm a 1-0 victory over the home town Moose at MTS Centre.

Friday, October 30, 2009: Manitoba 2, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 0 (SO) The Manitoba Moose earned a 2-1 shootout victory against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Friday night at MTS Centre to split their first series with the club this season. Sergei Shirokov scored Manitoba's lone goal in regulation time and notched the game-winner in the shootout. Goaltender Daren Machesney stopped 26 shots and all shooters in the shootout for his second victory this season and first star honors.

SEE YA NEXT YEAR, OCTOBER: Friday night's game against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins wrapped up October 2009 with a 8-4-2-0 record. By earning 18 of 28 possible points, the Moose calculated a 64 percent winning average. Last season, the Moose finished the month of October with a record of 6-2-0-0 earning 12 of 16 possible points. Manitoba's best-ever opening month was in 2004-05 when the club cruised to a 7-4-0-0 record and 14 points, winning 77.7 percent of their match-ups.

PENALTY SHOTS TO PONDER: For the first time in nearly five years, the Moose allowed a penalty shot on home ice in Friday's 2-1 shootout victory over the Penguins. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton forward Dustin Jeffrey capitalized on a 2nd period penalty shot against Moose goaltender Daren Machesney. The last time the Moose allowed a penalty shot goal on home ice was back on April 4, 2004 vs. St. John (5-5T). Manitoba had one other penalty shot situation this season, in which Cory Schneider defended an attempt on October 9, 2009 at Hamilton (2-1OTW).

TERRIFIC 'TENDING: Starting goaltender Daren Machesney set aside 26 of 27 shots in Friday night's 2-1 shootout win, earning his second victory of the season and first star honours. The Hamilton, ON. native has appeared in five games with the Moose this season and accumulated a 2-3-0 record, 2.14 GAA, and 0.921 save percentage. Machesney has 11 goals against on 129 attempts.

Upcoming Opponents

For the first time ever, the Manitoba Moose will host the Norfolk Admirals for a weekday double-header starting tonight at MTS Centre. In their nine year AHL history, the Moose have yet to meet the Admirals, who are playing in their 10th season. Although the teams have never met, the visit from the Admirals will bring former Moose winger, Juraj Simek, back to MTS Centre to face-off against his former club. Manitoba veteran defenseman, Nolan Baumgartner, also has a history with the Admirals - playing in 139 games with the club from 2000-02.

For the first time this season, Moose netminder Daren Machesney is the nominee for AHL Player of the Week... This week, the Hamilton, Ontario native stopped 47 of 49 shots in two games played... Thursday, Machensey stopped 21 of 22 shots and was flawless throughout 60 minutes of play to force overtime, where the Moose lost 1-0... Then on Friday, he collected his first shootout victory of the season by stopping 26 shots and all shootout attempts for a 2-1 victory... So far this season he has accumulated a 2-3-0 record, 2.14 GAA, and 0.921 save percentage.
