Wilmington Sharks News Release
Wilmington, NC - Coach Parker Bangs will return to Buck Hardee Field this summer to lead the Wilmington Sharks, and will be assisted by 2014 Wilmington Shark and Coastal Plain League All-Star Nate Moorhouse.
"Securing the return of Coach Bangs was something we wanted to get accomplished as soon as the 2014 season came to a close," said Sharks General Manager Pat Hutchins. "Coach Bangs really understands the game of baseball and is a true teacher of the sport."
"Nate will be a great addition to our staff," added Coach Bangs. "He's an experienced college baseball player with a desire to coach. He did a great job of helping out with the younger guys last year as a player, so it just seemed to make sense that he would be ideal to replace Coach Black being added to the NC State coaching staff."
After posting a 24-30 record during the summer of 2014, Coach Bangs and Moorhouse are looking forward to getting back to Wilmington for the summer. The Wilmington Sharks were able to successfully steal 121 bases in 2014, with the highest success rate in the Coastal Plain League.
"We will be running again, and we have the speed for it just like last year. Having Moorhouse in the first base box will be a big help in that aspect," said Coach Bangs. Mercer University's Nate Moorhouse successfully stole 26 bases for the Sharks in 2014, the second most on the team.
A pitcher on the University of South Carolina's 2010 National Championship team, Bangs is no stranger to the Coastal Plain League. Parker Bangs was a two-way player for the Fayetteville SwampDogs, posting an ERA of 2.12 in 2007, and batting .253 in 2008, while leading the team in RBIs with 31, and HRs with 4. Additionally, Bangs was an Assistant Coach for the Columbia Blowfish in 2013 following three years as a pitcher in the Kansas City Royals organization.
Bangs currently coaches the Heathwood Hall Varsity Boys baseball team in Columbia, South Carolina, and will bring the same coaching philosophies to Wilmington in the summer.
"Respect the game, take care of all the small things from a fundamental perspective. If we, as a team, can focus on those smaller aspects of the game, then everything else falls in line," says Bangs. "It's all about keeping the right mental approach in the box and on the mound, as well as minimizing mistakes in the field and on the bases."
Coach Bangs lights up when asked about what we can expect from the 2015 Wilmington Sharks.
"Our pitching staff will have a lot of skilled, experienced guys that can put us in a good position to win games and put together a strong season, hopefully culminating in a league championship."
