Moore Named AHL Radio Broadcaster of Year
July 18, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, are pleased to announce Kelly Moore has been named the radio winner of the James H. Ellery Memorial Award as the top radio broadcaster in the AHL.
The James H. Ellery Awards are presented to individuals in newspaper, television, and radio for outstanding media coverage of the American Hockey League.
The 2005-06 season was Moore's tenth and final year as the voice of the Moose on 680 AM CJOB Radio. Kelly's dedication and devotion to not only the Manitoba Moose, but also the American Hockey League was shown throughout his 10 years covering the Moose. Moore was a fountain of Moose knowledge in terms of statistics and trends due to his meticulous attention to detail each and every day on the job.
Each day during the season, Moore would attend practice without fail, collecting interviews before returning to CJOB to file his reports. He would also serve as the morning or afternoon sports reporter on CJOB either before or after practice. On game days, Kelly would spend his afternoons reviewing notes of each and every player on both teams. According to many in the game of hockey, both AHL and NHL, his preparation for games was unmatched. He also spent numerous hours going over the websites of most of the AHL and NHL teams in order to gather information on players and teams soon to face the Moose.
Overall, Kelly Moore's objectivity was probably his greatest asset as a broadcaster. He was an equal opportunity play-by-play man, dishing out both the kudos and the criticisms, regardless of the team's uniform. Like many of his colleagues in the AHL, Moore broadcasts games alone on the road. However, in all buildings to which he travels, Moore is largely considered to be a great spokesman for the Moose and the rest of the league. His popularity was reflected by requests to be interviewed himself in most arenas he visited in this - his final season in hockey.
Moore was also host of a weekly hour-long, call-in show on CJOB called the "Moose Hockey Show" that analyzed the issues behind the team and the league. Each Monday, whether on the road or at home, a different player, coach, or manager would appear with Kelly in-studio or in his hotel room to talk about the Moose and the AHL.
Moore also served as master of ceremonies at most events sponsored by the Moose during the season, such as the Tip-A-Moose Dinner, as well as the Manitoba Moose Yearling Foundation Dinner in support of Special Olympics to name just a couple.
Moore is now station director at CJKC-FM, "Country 103", a brand new country music station in his hometown of Kamloops, B.C.
Prior to leading the Moose broadcast team, Kelly Moore was the voice of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets for two seasons. During his 10 years as Moose play-by-play man, Moore was named International Hockey League Broadcaster of the Year on two different occasions (1997, 1999). The native of Burnaby, B.C., was also the voice of the Western Hockey League's Kamloops Blazers for ten seasons beginning in 1984-85.
