(MYRTLE BEACH, SC) Tyler Moore hit two more home runs and drove in six, Adrian Alaniz again dominated at BB&T Coastal Field, and the streaking Potomac Nationals dominated in a 7-1 series-opening victory in Myrtle Beach.
The hottest offense in the Carolina League cooled off yet another hot pitcher, chasing J.J. Hoover in the sixth inning. Hoover walked Mike Burgess - who had crushed the ball in his first two plate appearances - to get to Moore with two on and no outs in the inning. And Moore did what he has done lately: smashed a home run over the wall in left field that put the P-Nats ahead for good.
That would turn out to be all the run support Alaniz would need. For the second straight start in Myrtle, Alaniz pitched one-run eight innings. He allowed just four hits and struck out four.
Moore was back at it to put the game away in the seventh. Dan Lyons singled before Mike Burgess hit what appeared to be a double play ball. But Mycal Jones misplayed it, and would soon regret it. Moore belted his league-leading 20th home run, a titanic blast to left that jolted Potomac in front 7-0.
The Pelicans would get a run in the eighth; L.V. Ware hit the first pitch of the inning over the wall for a BB&T-Coastal-Field-special homer. Alaniz retired the next three batters and gave way to Justin Phillabaum who closed the victory in the ninth.
The two clubs are back at it Friday night at 7:05 P.M. Newcomer Jason Jones takes the mound for Potomac against Cory Rasmus. The broadcast can be heard beginning at 6:50.
