Moon Rises, Gives Honu First Win

October 1, 2008 - Hawaii Winter Baseball 2 (HWB 2)
North Shore Honu News Release

Kyu Hyun Moon's fifth single of the evening proved to be a game winner as the North Shore third baseman singled up the middle with two out in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Chris Carter from third and give the Honu its first win of the young Hawaii Winter Baseball season, 11-10, this evening at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park.

The Honu (1-2) scored runs in each of the first four innings, including a four-run third frame capped by Kyle Martin's line-drive home run. Martin laced a three-run home run into the trees beyond the left field fence and finished the day with 4 RBIs and a double. Kenji Sato also added two RBIs in support of North Shore.

Honu starter Jun Hyeok Heo of the Lotte Giants (Korea Baseball Organization) threw three innings during which he gave up an unearned run on three hits and two walks. Heo was in line for the win until reliever Sam Demel allowed base hits to the first two batters he faced in the ninth frame, and let Honolulu notch the score at 9-9 thanks to a Darin Holcomb sacrifice followed by Ryo Hijirisawa's RBI single up the middle.

Honolulu (2-1) appeared ready to maintain its perfect record when with the score deadlocked at 9-9 in the top of the tenth inning and two out, Kila Ka'aihue doubled on a line drive to right, and his pinch runner Michael Mitchell came around to score the go-ahead run on Tony Cruz's double to deep center that sailed well over Jordan Parazz's head to put the Sharks up by one.

But the home-team Honu had other plans as Yamaico Navarro singled and moved to third on Carter's single with one out in the bottom of the tenth. After Navarro scored the tying run on Matt McBride's sacrifice fly, Moon found a hole up the middle and allowed Carter to trot home with the walk-off run.

It was not a good night to be a pitcher as both squads combined to allow 33 hits, 19 walks and commit eight errors. Honu reliever Ben Swaggerty (1-0) picked up the victory despite allowing a run in the tenth, while Honolulu's Roy Merritt (0-1) was saddled with the loss.

Both teams return to Hans L'Orange Park for game two of the three-game set tomorrow at 3 p.m.
