Honu Mount Comeback, Play to Tie

October 1, 2008 - Hawaii Winter Baseball 2 (HWB 2)
North Shore Honu News Release

Faced with the possibility of being no-hit, North Shore rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to finish deadlocked with Honolulu, 6-6, this afternoon at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park.

The Honu (1-2-1) scored their first four runs-three in the third inning and one in the fourth-despite not managing a hit. North Shore relied on six Honolulu walks and an error to get runners on base, and brought three home on sacrifice flies-Jason Castro, Jordan Parraz and Kyle Martin had one apiece-to pull within 5-4 after four frames.

After the Sharks (2-1-1) took a 6-4 lead in the top of the seventh on a Kala Ka'aihue single that scored Michael Taylor, North Shore responded with two base runners to start the home half of the frame as Parraz singled, and Kurt Mertins walked. After the runners advanced one base on David Patton's wild pitch, Martin brought home Parraz on a sacrifice fly to right field, and Corey Brown tied the game with an RBI double to left field. Patton got Chris Carter to strike out and Matt McBride grounded out to Ka'aihue at first to end the game in a stalemate.

Jim Rapoport of the St. Louis Cardinals led Honolulu with a game-high three hits, while teammate Bradley Emaus chipped in two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

Sharks starter Scott Shaw threw an effective three innings, surrendering three unearned runs and striking out three. Reliever Chris Kissock added three innings of relief through which he allowed an earned run and fanned three.

The game was scheduled for a maximum of seven innings prior to the contest due to the squads' depleted pitching staffs, a result of Tuesday's extra-inning affair.

Both squads return to Hans L'Orange Park tomorrow at 3 p.m. for the series finale. The game is scheduled for seven innings in accordance with the managers' decision.
