Montgomery, Green to Pitch for T-Yanks on Opening Day

April 6, 2017 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Tampa Yankees News Release

TAMPA, Fla. - Due to the forecast of inclement weather in the northeast, LHP Jordan Montgomery and RHP Chad Green will join the Single-A Advanced Tampa Yankees to pitch on Thursday, April 6th, against the Lakeland Flying Tigers.

Both Montgomery and Green are competing for the fifth rotation spot with the New York Yankees. New York does not require a fifth starter until April 16th, thanks to the luxury of three off-days in the first two weeks of the Major League season.

Originally, Montgomery was slated to make his start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while Green was set to pitch for Double-A Trenton. A 90% chance of rain has forced the change of plans.

The competition was too close for the Yankees to make a decision following Spring Training.

Montgomery went 1-0 with a 3.20 ERA and one save in six games (two starts). The southpaw held opponents to a .213 average and tallied 17 strikeouts in 19 and two-third innings, walking only three. Notably, Montgomery recorded the final 12 batters in New York's no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers on March 17th.

Green finished 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA and one save in five games (two starts). The right-hander recorded a .209 opponent batting average and surrendered only two earned runs in 12 innings.

In order to prepare them to pitch on an every-fifth-day cycle, leading up to April 16th, it is vital for both Montgomery and Green to pitch on Thursday. That lines them up to pitch in the minor leagues, again, on April 11th before the winner is declared and joins the Yankees in the Bronx.

Montgomery returns to Tampa after having played in the Florida State League in 2015, going 6-5 with a 3.08 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) with the T-Yanks. He was originally drafted by New York in the fourth round in 2014 out of South Carolina.

Ironically, Green will face his former team in his return to the FSL. Drafted by the Detroit Tigers, Green pitched for Lakeland in 2013 and went 3-0 with a 3.65 ERA in 10 games (two starts) with the Flying Tigers. The Yankees acquired the Louisville alumnus in a trade that sent LHP Justin Wilson to Detroit in 2015.

First pitch between the T-Yanks and Flying Tigers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the newly renovated George M. Steinbrenner Field. For ticket and promotional information, please call (813) 673-3055 or visit TYBaseball.com .
