Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (Jan. 10, 2010) - For the second time this season, La Raza de Monterrey have handed the Milwaukee Wave a difficult defeat in their own building, winning 18-10 on Sunday to knock the Wave out of first place alone.
One night after a stirring comeback victory in Baltimore, the Wave were outscored 14-4 in the second half and fell to 5-3, even with the Blast atop the MISL standings.
"To compete for a championship, we're going to have to be able to play back-to-back games," said Wave forward Giuliano Oliviero, who finished with a goal and two assists. "We're going to be doing that the whole month of January."
Milwaukee took a 6-4 lead with a pair of power play goals in the final minute of the second quarter. Oliviero converted a shootout by pushing the ball off the right end boards and tapping in the rebound with 58 seconds left. He then set up Marco Terminesi with just nine seconds left after Angel Hernandez was called for tripping.
Chile Farias gave Monterrey the lead back with a 3-pointer, and after Ryan Mack provided the Wave their last lead on his first goal with the Wave, Jorge Duran extended the lead after the Wave misplayed a ball in their own end.
Victor Quiroz with a 2-pointer and Farias again on a 3-pointer made it 16-8.
Monterrey's Byron Alvarez received a red card with 7:46 to go, and the Wave brought out the sixth attacker for a 6-on-4 power play, but were unable to generate a serious shot on goal. Each team picked up a goal late for the final margin.
"Our legs were somewhat tired, but that's no excuse," said Wave coach Keith Tozer. "Some of our players had really bad outings today."
Monterrey and Milwaukee each have won both games on the other team's field. They play twice more this season, once in each place.
The Wave play back-to-back games next Saturday and Sunday with the Rockford Rampage. Saturday's game is at 7 p.m. in Rockford, and a fan bus is slated to make the trip. Tickets are just $30 and available by calling 414-224-9283.
Sunday's game at the U.S. Cellular Arena kicks off at 2 p.m. It's Faith and Family Day, and following the game enjoy a postgame concert on the field by Grammy nominee Matthew West. Call 224-9283 for tickets or visit Ticketmaster.com.
