March 3, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CELEVELAND - In the eighth of eight meetings between the two teams this season, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters were defeated in a shootout by the Milwaukee Admirals at The Q on Thursday by a final score of 4-3. With the shootout loss, the Monsters are 31-17-5-5 overall this season and with a .621 points percentage, remain alone in fourth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The author of the Monsters' game-winning goal in a 2-0 home win over Milwaukee on Tuesday, rookie left wing Sonny Milano, picked up right where he left off at 5:29 of the opening period on Thursday, as he delivered Lake Erie a 1-0 lead with a sharp-angle power-play score, assisted by Kerby Rychel and T.J. Tynan. Milwaukee's Max Gortz tied the game at 17:21 of the first with a five-on-three power-play goal, and at 5:16 of the middle stanza, Admirals' forward Pontus Aberg scored at even strength to put Milwaukee in front by a 2-1 margin.
The Monsters found a way to rally back in the heart of the second period, however, as an even-strength Daniel Zaar one-timer, assisted by Alex Broadhurst, tied the game at 12:45 before Josh Anderson, by virtue of a powerful net-front drive, put Lake Erie in front by a score of 3-2 at 14:54 with Trent Vogelhuber and Oleg Yevenko collecting assists on the play. The third period's only goal was scored by Admirals' forward Kevin Fiala at 16:55, an even-strength marker that forced overtime.
After a scoreless extra session, Fiala and Matt White scored in the first and third rounds of a shootout for Milwaukee, while Milano and Rychel were denied by Admirals net-minder Jusse Saros, resulting in a 4-3 Milwaukee victory.
Anton Forsberg stopped 25 of the 28 pucks he faced in regulation and fell to 16-8-4 overall this season in net for Lake Erie, while Saros improved to 18-6-0 by virtue of a 25-save performance. With Thursday's shootout defeat, the Monsters capped their season-long seven-game home-stand at 5-0-0-2, having earned 12 of a possible 14 points over that span.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Saturday road clash vs. the Rockford IceHogs with full coverage, live from the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford, IL, at 8:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
