Monarchs Nip Pirates In Game 1

Portland, Maine -The Manchester Monarchs scored twice in the opening five minutes of the third period on their way to a 2-1 win over the Portland Pirates in Game 1 of their Atlantic Division Semifinal Series played tonight in front of 2,634 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The Monarchs lead the best-of-seven series 1-0.

John Zeiler and Bud Holloway struck in a 2:15 span to erase a 1-0 Pirates advantage.

Derek Whitmore struck for the only Pirates goal.

Whitmore netted the only goal of the first two periods when he capitalized on a power-play opportunity six minutes into the game giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead after the first and second periods. Zeiler and Holloway complete the scoring early in the third.

The Monarchs out shot the Pirates 30-23 in the game as J.P. Lamoureux took the loss.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Holloway; 2. Lamoureux and 3. Zeiler.

Pirates Playoff Hockey powered by Time Warner Cable continues tomorrow (Saturday) at 7 p.m. at the CCCC with the first 1,000 fans into the game receiving a free cowbell courtesy of MaineJobs.com.
