Real Maryland Monarchs News Release

The Real Maryland Monarchs are back in action as they play the Charlotte Eagles in their last home match of the season on Saturday, August 7th at 6:30 pm. This will be the fourth matchup between the two teams this season.

Real Maryland (3-8-7), currently at the bottom of the table, is looking to end its play at home on a high note. Charlotte (5-7-6) is currently fourth in the stands, three points behind the last playoff spot.

The Monarchs and the Eagles have played in some exciting matches this year. In their first match-up, the teams managed to a 0-0 tie in a constant downpour. The Monarchs pulled out a win in the two team's next meeting, seeing goals from midfielder Jamie Darvill and forward Alan Sanchez in a 2-0 victory over the Eagles. In the final match-up, early goals by Charlotte midfielder Jorge Herrera and Real Maryland midfielder Joel Senior started what appeared to be a high scoring affair, but the defenses prevailed in what would be a 1-1 draw.

Real Maryland is coming off a tough 2-0 loss at the hands of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in a game that saw many scoring opportunities for both sides. The Monarch's inability to finish scoring chances once again hurt them, as it was their eleventh time being shut out this season. The loss knocked the Monarchs out of playoff contention for this season, and now leave them playing for optimism for next season.

Charlotte is coming off two heartbreaking results against Pittsburgh and Charleston. A goal in the 89th minute against the Riverhounds was the difference in a 1-0 loss, putting the Eagles playoff hopes in doubt. An extra time goal by Charleston led to a 2-2 draw in the Eagles last home match of the season. With only two games remaining in their regular season, the Eagles are looking to move ahead of the Riverhounds and into the playoffs.

Real Maryland will be looking for continued stellar play from their defense, anchored by defenders Gareth Evans, Mason Trafford, Kenneth Sola, and goalkeeper Brian Levey. However, having only scored three goals in their past seven games, the Monarchs will need to generate some offense from their forwards and midfielders. It will be up to points leader Benjamin Hunter and forwards David Bulow and Joel Senior to provide some offensive life for the team.

The Eagles will be looking to their points leader Herrera to continue his offensive production that he has demonstrated throughout the season. He will also need help from forward Debola Ogunseye to continue putting the ball in the back of the net. Defenders Brady Bryant and Josh Rife anchor an Eagles defense that has given up 25 goals this year.

This game presents two different meanings for both squads; one is looking to keep this season alive while the other is looking for hope for next season. Either way, this game promises to be an exciting, tightly-fought match.
