Sacramento Monarchs News Release

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., NOV. 16, 2005 - The 2005 WNBA Champion Sacramento Monarchs today announce that guard Chelsea Newton was selected by the Chicago Sky in the Expansion Draft. Chicago submitted their final roster late last night, which included one player from all 13 existing WNBA teams.

Sacramento selected Newton in the second round (22nd) overall in the 2005 WNBA draft this past April. In her rookie year, Newton started all 34 games for the Monarchs averaging 21 minutes, 4.4 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.3 blocks per game. She earned 2005 WNBA All-Rookie Team honors for her efforts this past season, along with helping the Monarchs win their first ever WNBA Championship title.

"It's disappointing to lose Chelsea," said Monarchs Head Coach and General Manager John Whisenant. "Losing her is like losing one of my daughters. Being a 2nd round draft pick and starting for us, I'm not sure if that really has occurred that much in the past, much less starting for a Championship team. Chicago recognized Chelsea's contributions to a winning team so they chose her. It's a sad day for the Monarchs, me personally, the team and the fans as well."

Be a part of the Monarchs 10th Anniversary season. 2006 Sacramento Monarchs Season Tickets are also on sale, please call (916) 419-WNBA. For more information, please visit the Monarchs website at www.SacramentoMonarchs.com
