Charlotte Sting lose Jia Perkins to Sky in expansion draft

November 16, 2005 - The newest WNBA franchise, the Chicago Sky, have selected guard Jia Perkins from the Charlotte Sting in the 2005 Expansion Draft, it was announced today.

Perkins, a 5-8 guard, was originally selected by the Sting with the 35th overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft. Last season, she averaged 5.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 15.5 minutes in 30 games for Charlotte.

"We are saddened to see Jia leave Charlotte," said Sting General Manager Trudi Lacey. "She was just beginning to blossom as a professional athlete. We understand the expansion process and we were prepared for Chicago to select one of our talented players. Going to Chicago gives Jia another opportunity to grow as a player and we wish her nothing but the best."

In addition to Perkins, the Chicago Sky selected 12 other players to begin building their inaugural roster. These players include Brooke Wyckoff (Connecticut Sun), Elaine Powell (Detroit Shock), Kiesha Brown (Houston Comets), Deanna Jackson (Indiana Fever), Laura Macchi (Los Angeles Sparks), Stacey Lovelace (Minnesota Lynx), DeTrina White (New York Liberty), Ashley Robinson (Phoenix Mercury), Chelsea Newton (Sacramento Monarchs), Bernadette Ngoyisa (San Antonio Silver Stars), Francesca Zara (Seattle Storm) and Stacey Dales-Schuman (Washington Mystics).

An inaugural member of the WNBA, the Sting will celebrate their 10th anniversary as they move uptown to the Charlotte Bobcats Arena in the summer of 2006.
