North Shore Spirit News Release

Lynn, MA – North Shore Spirit owner Nick Lopardo announced last year that he would proudly sponsor Olympic hopeful Molly Taber. Taber, 30, is an elite runner who is training for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.

In October 2002, Taber qualified for the 2004 United States Olympic Marathon Trials by running a 2:42:13 at the Chicago Marathon; resulting in an overall finish of 235, and sixth in her division.

Today, Molly Taber is in full training for the Olympic Marathon that takes place in St. Louis, MO on April 3. The top three women (out of about 150) should go to the Olympics if their time is sufficient and meets the Olympic standard of 2:37.

Taber is currently training with six other women under the tutelage of Fernando Braz, a former Peabody High and Boston College All-American. Taber says that Braz has done wonders for her running. "Fernando has brought my time down from 3:15 (in the Boston Marathon) to 2:42. He has been great."

In addition to running cross-country in the fall, Taber's training regiment consists of heavy mileage and track workouts. "I usually have three workouts a week, and sometimes I double up with two workouts a day," says Taber. "I also meet with a trainer to prevent injuries and stay in good health."

Taber looks to run a ½ Marathon soon and a five-mile race just before the Olympic Marathon. She is also going to Florida in March for two weeks to get accustomed to running in a warmer climate.

Taber is a graduate of Masconomet Regional High School (1991) and Bates College (1995). She was a star soccer player at Masconoment and Bates, but after graduating she decided to focus on her running career. Taber joined the Merrimack Striders in 1998 and now has hopes of representing the United States in the 2004 Olympic Games.

The terms of the sponsorship agreement with Nick Lopardo and the North Shore Spirit require Taber to wear the North Shore Spirit logo attire in various running events. Taber will display the North Shore Spirit logo on her back during the 2004 Olympic trials. The Spirit will also provide training clothes and running shoes, entry fees and assist Taber with transportation expenses to and from events.

The Spirit begin the 2004 season at home on May 26 against the Allentown Ambassadors. Season tickets and mini-plans are now on-sale by calling the Spirit ticket office at 781-592-0007. You can keep up-to-date with all the Spirit action by logging on to www.northshorespirit.com.
