NEW LONDON, Conn. (May 22, 2003) â The Mohegan Wolves (arenafootball2) will look to start another winning streak this Friday night (May 23) when they play host to the Norfolk Nighthawks at Mohegan Sun Arena. Friday's game, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m., features a special promotion for children. The first 1,000 children inside the doors will receive a FREE "Blitz" (Mohegan Wolves Mascot) Bobblehead Doll, courtesy of Purina and the Norwich Bulletin.
Wolves Game Six Recap â 5/16/03 â In its most recent game on Friday, May 16, Mohegan's offense broke out early and often and the team's defense held strong in the late moments as the Wolves throttled the Richmond Speed, 56-43, at Mohegan Sun Arena. With the win, Mohegan improved to 4-2 overall while the Speed dropped to 3-3. The Wolves' four wins also set a new franchise record for most victories in a single season. Mohegan was led by rookie QB Greg Smith, who completed 12-of-17 passes for 236 yards and six touchdowns in his first career start to earn Game MVP honors. Smith's six touchdown passes tied the team record for most touchdown passes in one game, set last season by Cable Davis. Mohegan received a number of other strong individual efforts from the likes of OS Cy Butler and OL/DL Charlie Cook. Butler earned Ironman of the Game honors for leading the team with four catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Butler also recorded a game-high 139 yards in returns, including a 54-yarder. Cook earned ADT Defensive Player of the Game accolades for roughing up Richmond for a career-high three sacks.

Friday's game between the Wolves and Nighthawks will be the third all-time meeting between the two teams. The series is currently tied, 1-1. Their two previous head-to-head battles came last season. In the first matchup on April 13, 2002, the Wolves defeated the Nighthawks, 47-29, at Mohegan Sun Arena. In the rematch on May 4, 2002, Norfolk won at home in overtime, 58-51. Norfolk is led by the one-two punch of QB Aaron Sparrow and OS Travis Burns. Sparrow was almost flawless in the Nighthawk's most recent win at WB/Scranton on May 16, throwing for six touchdowns and no interceptions. Burns has been Norfolk's most explosive offensive weapon in 2003. Through six games, he ranks among the league leaders in scoring (T-7th, 96 pts), all-purpose yards (2nd, 1,335 yds and receiving yards (T-5th, 703 yds). Mohegan will be led again by its defense, which ranks tied for first overall in the league in sacks with 14 recorded on the season. Charlie Cook leads the Wolves individually in that category with five. Offensively, the Wolves will look for more positive play from QB Greg Smith and his receiving corps.
