
Mobile's Zach Gibbons Named SL All-Star Game MVP

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Following an impressive 3-for-3 performance that featured three runs and four RBIs, Mobile BayBears outfielder Zach Gibbons was named the 2018 Southern League All-Star Game MVP Presented by BUSH'S® Best Beans.
Gibbons, 24, contributed on seven of his team's nine runs as the South Division All-Stars bested the North Division All-Stars by a 9-5 final score at Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
Entering the game in front of a sold out crowd of 8,500 fans, the Scottsdale, Arizona native halted the North Division's combined no-hitter in the top of the seventh inning before coming around to score on a two-run homer by Jacksonville, Alabama native Shed Long.
In the eighth inning, the University of Arizona product plated a pair of runs to put the South Division out front 5-2 before another two-RBI single in the ninth sealed both a victory and an MVP award.
A 17th round selection by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft, Gibbons entered today's game with a .280 batting average and 53 hits in 53 games for the BayBears.
Tyler Marlette of the Mississippi Braves gave the South Division All-Stars the lead in the ninth inning with a solo home run. Long, Corey Ray, Rudy Flores, Ryan Boldt, and Danny Mendick also recorded multi-hit games.
Zack Collins of the Birmingham Barons won the 2018 Southern League Home Run Derby, which preceded Tuesday night's game.
