BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Mobile BayBears defeated the Birmingham Barons by the score of 8-3 on Thursday night, July 20th, in Southern League action at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
Steven Smitherman hit a grand slam (8) and drove in five runs for Mobile as starter Sean Thompson (5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) picked up the win to improve to 4-7. Dustin Delucchi scored three runs and Vince Sinisi had three RBI for the BayBears (42-55, 15-13), who picked up their first win of the series.
Lucas Harrell (4.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 1 K; now 0-1) suffered the loss for Birmingham (45-53, 14-14) in his Class AA debut.
Birmingham and Mobile will continue their five-game series on Friday, July 21st, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Hoover Met. RHP Jose Oyervidez (2-9, 4.08 ERA) is listed as the probable starter for the BayBears, while LHP Tyler Lumsden (9-3, 2.75 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Barons.
