
BayBears upend Birmingham, 4-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Mobile BayBears defeated the Birmingham Barons by the score of 4-1 on Friday night, July 21st, in Southern League action at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
Vince Sinisi homered (2) and drove in two while Juan Ciriaco went 1-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored for the BayBears (43-55, 16-13). Mobile starter Jose Oyervidez (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 6 K; now 3-9) struck out six while allowing just three hits and one earned run en route to his third victory of the year. Stephen Smitherman hit his ninth home run of the season and Dale Thayer notched his 18th save.
Micah Schnustein (1-for-3) hit his sixth homer of the 2006 campaign to account for the Barons' lone run. Starter Tyler Lumsden (6.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) fell to 9-4 for Birmingham (45-54, 14-15), which allowed three unearned runs.
The Barons and the BayBears will play the rubber game of the five-game set on Saturday, July 22nd, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. RHP Dirk Hayhurst (2-1, 3.57 ERA) is listed as the probable starter for Mobile, while LHP Corwin Malone (8-6, 3.49 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Birmingham.
