MLS Disciplinary Committee Suspends and Fines San Jose Earthquakes Defender Chris Leitch

May 27, 2009 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK (May 27, 2009) - The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee today fined San Jose Earthquakes defender Chris Leitch $250 and suspended him one game for egregious and reckless conduct during the Earthquakes game versus the Houston Dynamo on May 23.

Leitch was involved in a play with Houston Dynamo player Brian Ching in the 38th minute that resulted in Ching being injured. The play was reviewed by the Disciplinary Committee and the Committee determined that Leitch's actions endangered the safety of an opponent. Leitch will serve the one-game suspension when the Earthquakes face the Columbus Crew on Wednesday, May 27.

As one of the League's official Charities of Choice, the US Soccer Foundation is the recipient of all player fines at the end of each season. Those fines are added to the Foundation's Annual Grants Pool from which the Board of Directors awards grants to soccer clubs and organizations that serve economically disadvantaged children in urban areas.
