Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- This could be another obligatory press release about a football team making a public appearance.
But as Daytona Beach Head Coach/General Manager Ervin Bryson marched in Monday's Martin Luther King Jr. parade, he paused a minute to reflect.
Since arriving in Daytona Beach, Bryson has met the daughter of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, whose legendary journey to breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier began in a spring training game in a Daytona Beach ballpark that now bears Robinson's name. He's visited the campus of Bethune-Cookman College, whose founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, paved the way for African Americans through education and social change. Now he's participating in a parade honoring one of the nation's foremost activists in an official capacity representing a professional sporting franchise.
"These have been great opportunities for me,'' Bryson said. "It's made me think about the people who have made it possible for me as an African American to have a better life."
Several members of the Hawgs and the Harleigh Girls participated in the two-mile parade.
"It feels good to be a part of the Daytona Beach community,'' Bryson said. "We will continue to participate and hopefully add to the dynamic of the area."
