MLB Veteran LHP Matt Riley Signed

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Orange County Flyers have signed left-handed pitcher Matt Riley, a four-year MLB veteran who played for Baltimore and Texas, as the Flyers look to continue to strengthen its pitching staff for a potential playoff run. Flyers manager Paul Abbott and Harris Tulchin, Executive VP of Player Personnel, inked the southpaw on August 15 before the league-wide roster freeze.

Riley, 31, made 18 starts and pitched in 26 games in the Major Leagues between 1999 and 2005, going 5-4 with a 5.99 ERA over 97.2 big league innings with 78 strikeouts. The Baltimore Orioles drafted him in the third round, 105th overall, in 1997. When he made his MLB debut on September 9, 1999, Riley was the youngest player in the major leagues that season. During the 1999 season, the leftie was not only an Eastern League and Double-A All-Star starting pitcher, he was also a Baseball America 1st team minor league All-Star starting pitcher and the Baltimore Orioles Minor League Player of the Year.

Tonight Riley, who pitched at the Triple-A level for the Dodgers as recently as 2008, is expected to make his debut with Orange County as the Flyers are giving away dry-fit Flyers t-shirts as well as bobbleheads of KFI host John Kobylt to the first 500 fans in the gate, and first pitch is at 6:05pm with a post-game movie "Little Big League" being shown in the outfield after the game. Also on Friday, KFI's "John & Ken Show" will be hosting their show at the ballpark from 2-7pm.

On Saturday, the Flyers are hosting "Strikeout Pancreatic Cancer Night" at the ballpark, and the team will be wearing special purple uniforms that will be available through an in-game silent auction to raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and their fight against pancreatic cancer. The Flyers are currently tied for first- place in the GBL South Division second half standings with Na Koa Ikaika Maui.
