Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (October 16, 2011) -The Missouri Mavericks' Dale Mahovsky and Lachlan MacIntosh converted penalty shots as the Mavericks edged the host Quad City Mallards 5-4 in a shootout in the finale of the Ice Breaker this afternoon.
Only Mickey Lang- who also had two goals and one assist in regulation- scored in the shootout for the Mallards in what was the Flock's preseason finale. Maverick goaltender Jakub Macek turned aside four of five Quad City penalty shots to earn the win in relief of starter Gerry Festa.
Missouri's Nathan O'Nabigan forced the shootout by scoring with just 1:25 left in the third period to tie the game at four. A Jared Brown goal had given the Mallards a 4-3 lead less than two minutes earlier.
Just as was the case in the latter stages of the third period, the early going of the third likewise produced ample offensive fireworks. Just 16 seconds into the period, Lang evened the score at two with his second of the night. The Mallards then took their first lead when Phillip Ischi scored at the 5:32 mark. The advantage lasted just one minute before Missouri's Kris Hogg knotted the score at three.
The Mavericks seemed to have the wind at their backs heading into the third period after Toms Hartmanis responded to Lang's first goal- unassisted at 8:43 of the second period- by scoring with just three seconds left in the second, but momentum would prove ephemeral in the third period.
Missouri struck first on the afternoon when Cole Ruwe scored from close range just 1:49 into the game.
