
Mississippi Scores 2 Shorties to Down Rivermen

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Peoria Rivermen gave up two shorthanded goals and fell 4-2 to the Mississippi RiverKings on Saturday night at Landers Center.
The RiverKings opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal with 7:38 left in the first period when Leo Thomas broke up a pass high in the Peoria zone and completed a 2-on-1 break on his own from the left circle.
Misssissippi increased the lead to 2-0 with 17:08 remaining in the second period on a rebound goal chipped into an open night by Paul Ciarelli assisted by Joey Holka and Ryan Marcuz. Ciarelli tipped in an easy rebound of a Marcuz shot to build the advantage to 3-0 with 4:21 left before the second intermission. Jake Trask connected on a rebound of a Mike Gurtler shot with 56.3 seconds left to cut the deficit to 3-1 at the second intermission.
The Rivermen sliced the lead to 3-2 with 11:54 remaining in regulation on a Jordan Sims rebound over prone Mississippi goalie Peter Di Salvo, but the RiverKings got the tally back with 7:44 left on their second shorthanded goal of the game as Reid Campbell completed a 3-on-1 break for a 4-2 lead.
Peter Di Salvo remains undefeated in three games in net against the Rivermen by making 33 saves for the win while Dustin Carlson stopped 33 shots in the loss in his Rivermen debut. The Rivermen were 1-for-4 on the power play while giving up the two shorthanded goals, while the RiverKings were 0-for-7.
Peoria remains in second place in the Southern Professional Hockey League with a record of 19-11-3 for 41 points, one behind first place Knoxville. The RiverKings improve to 17-15-2 for 36 points and are now 3-2-0 against the Rivermen.
The Rivermen continue their six-game road trip with contests on Thursday and Friday at Louisiana and Saturday at Pensacola. Face-offs are at 7:05 each night with pre-game at 6:45 on SPHLLive.com and www.rivermen.net . The Rivermen return to Carver Arena for a weekend series with the Huntsville Havoc on Feb. 6, 7 and 8.
