Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Seth Johnston's bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth plated Drew Macias with the game-winning run in San Antonio's 2-1 triumph over the Hooks Monday night at Wolff Municipal Stadium.

Macias drew a walk against reliever Sammy Gervacio to open the home eighth. Chad Huffman flied out to center, bringing Kyle Blanks to the plate. Blanks lofted a high fly ball into shallow-to-medium center field, but neither center fielder Eli Iorg nor shortstop Drew Sutton could get the ball to make a play. The ball fell in for a pop-up single, giving the Missions runners at first and second.

Mike Baxter pinch hit for Craig Cooper and walked to load the bases. Johnston made contact with the first pitch and hit a routine fly ball to center that Iorg tucked away for the second out. Macias tagged and scored just ahead of Iorg's throw to make it a 2-1 game.

The Hooks scored first Monday, as Iorg opened the second with a triple to right-center, his third of the year. Mitch Einertson followed with a single to put Corpus Christi in front 1-0. Einertson leads the Hooks with 38 RBI's.

The Missions responded in their half of the fifth. Sean Kazmar opened the frame with an infield hit and moved to second on pitcher Steve Garrison's sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch got Kazmar to third, while walks by Jon Schemmel and Macias loaded the bases for Huffman, whose single to right plated Kazmar to knot the affair at 1-1.

Hooks' starter Polin Trinidad was again effective but did not figure in the decision. He allowed one run on five hits and a pair of walks while notching four strikeouts. Three of the five hits he gave up were singles by Huffman.

Garrison sprayed eight hits over six innings while allowing just the one tally. He did not issue a walk and struck out seven.

Jon Ellis (8-3) worked the eighth to record the win. Greg Burke had a perfect ninth to collect his eighth save. Gervacio (2-4) suffered the loss, with one run and one hit allowed over two innings.

The two clubs conclude the first half of play when they get together again Tuesday evening at 7:05. Tip Fairchild (1-3) toes the slab for the Hooks while Manny Ayala (0-1) handles the pitching chores for San Antonio.
