June 29, 2022 - California League (CalL)
San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants suffered a second straight loss to the Modesto Nuts with a 3-1 setback on Wednesday afternoon at Excite Ballpark. Missed opportunities at the plate cost San Jose late as the Giants stranded eight runners on base over the final four innings, including the bases loaded twice. San Jose (43-28, 3-2 second half) has now dropped back-to-back games after winning a season-high 11 in a row.
For the second straight day, it was a frustrating game for the Giants offensively. San Jose was held to six hits on Wednesday and finished the contest 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. The Giants had the potential tying run in scoring position in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings, but could not breakthrough against the Modesto bullpen.
The Nuts opened the scoring in the top of the second on a Walking Cabrera solo home run off of San Jose starter Nick Sinacola. The Giants though immediately answered in the bottom of the frame in what turned out to be the club's only run of the day. Riley Mahan led off by drawing a walk before Anyesber Sivira singled with one out. Garrett Frechette was up next and he grounded a single up the middle to bring home Mahan with the tying run. San Jose though was unable to add on as consecutive strikeouts of Ronaldo Flores and Alexander Suarez followed to end the inning.
Meanwhile, Sinacola bounced back with consecutive scoreless innings in the third and fourth. When Brett Rodriguez led off the top of the fifth, it was Modesto's first hit since Cabrera's homer in the second. Randy Bednar then doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third with none out and prompt a pitching change. Spencer Bivens was summoned from the bullpen and he struck out Amador Arias for the first out. Ben Ramirez though followed with an RBI groundout as Rodriguez scored to give the Nuts back the lead at 2-1.
Modesto then stretched their advantage to 3-1 when David Sheaffer connected for a solo home run off of Bivens in the top of the sixth.
Despite several chances, the Giants were unable to rally against the Nuts bullpen. In the bottom of the sixth, Carter Williams led off with a single, Yorlis Rodriguez was hit by a pitch with one out and Frechette walked with two down, however Flores then grounded out to end the threat.
Still down by two runs, San Jose put the potential runs in scoring position with none out in the bottom of the seventh, but again came away empty-handed. Suarez was plunked to start the inning before Grant McCray laced a double down the right field line. Aeverson Arteaga though struck out on three pitches and then after Williams walked to load the bases, Mahan struck out and Rodriguez popped out as the score remained at 3-1.
The Giants again appeared poised to rally in the bottom of the ninth, but once more came up short. With one out, McCray walked before Arteaga ripped a double into the left field line corner to put runners at second and third. Modesto reliever Kelvin Nunez though came back with consecutive swinging strikeouts of Williams and Mahan to end the game.
Four Nuts relievers combined to throw the final seven innings with no runs allowed and nine strikeouts.
