Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release

CINCINNATI – Missed opportunities doomed the Swamp Foxes as they dropped their third consecutive ball game Saturday night 30-13 to the expansion Cincinnati Swarm.

The Swarm won the first game of its history.

Head coach Rik Richards was pleased with the performance by his team, but was visibly frustrated with the loss.

"We had the opportunities, we just didn't capitalize," said Richards. "The guys played hard. I couldn't be prouder of the effort. We've just got some questions that need to be answered."

He added, "We had great chances to be 3-0, but things just haven't gone our way and we're staring at 0-3."

The loss and missed opportunities over shadowed the performances of several Swamp Foxes' players. Terrance Quattlebaum led the offense with 10 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown. He was chased closely by wide receiver/defensive back Mike Chandler who tallied 89 yards on five receptions and a score.

Starting quarterback Billy Luckie finished 15-of-29 for 187 yards and two scores. He was replaced at the start of the fourth quarter by rookie Kyle Rowley. The frosh finished five-for-six after connecting on his first five attempts.

Defensively, Mike Davis tallied five tackles, including one for loss and recovered a fumble. Defensive specialist Demont Smith tallied a career-high three interceptions, a Swamp Foxes single-game record. Smith currently has four on the season to lead the team.

For the third consecutive week, the Swamp Foxes won the battle on paper. The defense limited the Swarm to 166 yards of total offense while the offense rattled off 248 yards. However, 101 yards of penalties, three lost fumbles, and a pair of turnovers were too much to overcome.

Trailing 21-13 at the start of the fourth quarter, Luckie was lifted for Kyle Rowley, who proceeded to drive the team down the field. However, after a Mike Davis rush into the end zone was negated by a holding penalty, the Swamp Foxes failed on fourth down coming up empty-handed.

On the ensuing drive, the Swarm scored on a 34-yard pass, pushing the advantage to 27-13 and sealing the Swamp Foxes' fate.

The Swamp Foxes return to the Lowcountry for the home opener next Saturday, April 26 as they host the Birmingham Steeldogs at the North Charleston Coliseum. Kick off is set for 7:30 pm.
