MISL names players of the week

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

Jim Larkin, Cleveland Force

Larkin stopped 19 of 22 shots for the Force as Cleveland defeated Eastern Division-rival Philadelphia, 6-3, at the Convocation Center at Cleveland State University on Nov. 26. The 29-year-old goalkeeper improved to 2-3 on the season as the Force evened its record at 3-3. Larkin ranks fourth in the MISL in save percentage (.712) and sixth in the MISL in goals-against average (5.86). In the 2003-04 season, Larkin finished second in the MISL in save percentage (.754), and fifth in g.a.a. (5.03), with an 11-15 record in 28 games. The Toronto, Ont., native, is a three-time All-Star (twice with Cleveland, once with Wichita), who owns a career record of 57-65. The Player of the Week honor is the eighth of Larkin's six-year professional indoor career.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Nate Houser, St. Louis Steamers

Houser was instrumental in lifting the Steamers to wins over Kansas City and Chicago over the weekend, and into first-place in the MISL Central Division. On Nov. 27 the 32-year-old midfielder/defender returned to Kansas City, where he'd played the previous 11 seasons, and helped the Steamers defeat the Comets, 7-6, when he assisted on Cal Thomas' game-winner that came with eight seconds left in regulation. On Nov. 28, Houser scored a goal and added three blocks as the Steamers moved ahead of Chicago in the standings by defeating the Storm, 8-7, at Savvis Center. The native of San Diego, Calif., has one goal, three assists, and nine blocks in seven games for the Steamers (6-2). In his 12-year professional indoor career, Houser has played in 373 games, scored 189 goals, and added 111 assists and 327 blocks.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Sterling Wescott, St. Louis Steamers

Wescott totaled two goals and three assists for the Steamers over the weekend as St. Louis defeated Kansas City (7-6) and Chicago (8-7) to improve to 6-2 and move into first-place in the MISL Central Division. Wescott assisted on two goals in the win at Kansas City on Nov. 27. Then on Nov. 28, the 32-year-old midfielder scored a third-quarter goal to make it 7-7 before assisting on Mike Apple's game-winner, which came 10:45 into the fourth quarter. Wescott also added a first-quarter goal and two blocks in the 8-7 victory. The native of Aurora, Colo., has five goals, six assists and 11 blocks in eight games this year. Prior to joining the Steamers in 2003, the one-time NCAA All-American at Fresno State had played professional indoor with Wichita (NPSL) and Utah (WISL). The MISL Player of the Week honor is Wescott's first.
