MISL Names Players of the Week
Published on January 19, 2004 under Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release
GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Peter Pappas, Philadelphia KiXX
Pappas was nothing short of perfect on Saturday night, saving 16 of 16 shots in Philadelphia's 5-0 win over the San Diego Sockers at the Wachovia Spectrum. The shutout was the first in the MISL since April 2, 1999, when Pappas and the KiXX blanked the Florida ThunderCats 12-0. The blank sheet is the third of Pappas' career, second in League history to Jamie Swanner, who had eight. The Toronto native is one of five men in League history with multiple career shutouts. The 31-year-old is currently third in the MISL with a 4.46 goals against average and 10 wins, second in save percentage at .759, and fourth in minutes played (900) and saves (211). He was also named the League's Goalkeeper of the Week on October 6 and 13.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jeff Davis, Kansas City Comets
Davis scored six points and blocked four shots as the Comets went 1-1 over the weekend. In Kansas City's 8-6 win over Milwaukee on Friday, Davis was a factor at both ends of the field with four blocks and two points (goal, assist). He followed up with a four-block effort in Saturday's 9-7 loss to Cleveland. The 32-year-old has quietly been one of the most productive players in the MISL this season: he is now tied for fourth in the League with 34 blocks, and is the second-highest-scoring defender in the MISL with 24 points (14th overall). Over his last seven games, the St. Louis native has notched 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) and blocked 14 shots.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Zoran Karic, Cleveland Force
The most prolific playmaker in indoor soccer history returned to his old form on Saturday night, with one goal and six assists in Cleveland's 9-7 win over the Kansas City Comets. With six assists, Karic came within two of tying the League record, which he set with eight helpers on February 4, 1995, against the Canton Invaders. He recorded the 2,100th point of his indoor soccer career in the process. The 42-year-old is now tied for the team lead in scoring with 19 points, and has scored three goals and 11 points in his last two games.
