Miracles Drop An Overtime Thriller to the Mill Rats

(Moncton, NB) The Moncton Miracles lost a close one in overtime to the Saint John Mill Rats with a final score of 137-130 in front of 1,076 fans.

The visiting Mill Rats squad started the game with an early 7-2 lead over the Miracles. Moncton refused to stay down and would soon not only tie the game but take control of the scoreboard. Chris Matthews would drain a 3 to beat the buzzer and give the Miracles a 31-26 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Saint John's bench would show up with 26 points in the second half to help them take the lead. With the lead having changed 7 times, it was still anyone's game. The Mill Rats ended the second quarter with a 61-57 lead. Trayvon Lathen led the way for the Miracles squad with 20 points while Shawn Vanzant added in with 10. Kenny Jones and Johnny Mayhane each had 12 points for the visiting Mill Rats.

Moncton would spend the third quarter pushing to close the gap that the Mill Rats had created. Late in the fourth the Miracles would dig in and begin to creep up on their 506 rivals. Daquan Brooks would knock down a huge 3 with 3:40 left to play in the game to tie it up 109-109. Lathan would steal the ball and pass it down the court to Brooks to lay it in to tie it up 117-117 with 23.5 seconds remaining. Anthony Anderson would take the last regulation shot for the Mill Rats and miss sending the game into overtime, 117-117.

Overtime would go shot for shot and have everyone on the building on the edge of their seats. Troy Brewer would be handed a technical foul with 15.1 seconds left in the game sending Anthony Anderson to line to give the Mill Rats a 134-128 lead. The Mill Rats would head to the line 35 times, shooting 83% and outscoring the hometown team by 17 at the line compared to the Miracles 16 attempts, and only 75%.

Shawn Vanzant led the way for the Miracles with 30 points. Trayvon Lathan added in with 28 and Daquan Brooks with 16.

Darin Mency and Kenny Jones were on fire for the Mill Rats with 25 points each. Jeremy Williams netter 20.

The Miracles are back at home again tomorrow Tuesday, February 23rd against the London Lightning. Tip-off is 7pm at the Moncton Coliseum.
