Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL - The Fort Myers Miracle sent spot starter Josh Hill to the mound and he squared off against Thresher All-Star James Happ. Hill kept the Miracle in the game and they got to the Thresher bullpen as the Miracle came away with a 7-3 victory on Friday night at Hammond Stadium to improve to 2-0 in the second half.
Hill, starting his first game of the season, was solid during his 4.2 innings of work. He made one mistake in the fourth inning, giving up a two run homer to Brandon Florence, his fourth of the season to give the Threshers a 2-1 lead. Hill ran into a little trouble in the fifth when he gave up a lead off double to J.J. Johnson and with two outs walked Brian Burgamy. Hill was pulled because of his pitch count and gave way to Ryan Callahan. He gave up a broken bat single to Tim Moss which scored Johnson giving the Threshers a 3-2 lead. Hill went 4.2 innings allowing three runs on three hits while walking two and striking out five. Callahan went 2.1 shutout innings allowing three hits while walking one and striking out three in receiving his third win of the season.
The Miracle got on the board first against Happ, who entered the game just 3-7, but had an impressive 2.80 ERA. In the second Deacon Burns singled, stole second, one of five steals for the Miracle on the evening, and after a walk to Korey Feiner, Justin Arneson doubled home Burns to give the Miracle a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth with the Miracle trailing 2-1, Burns walked with two outs and scored on Feiner's double to right.
The Miracle are 0-23 when trailing after seven innings, so as they entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 3-2 they needed some runs and they got it right away. Alexi Casilla led off the inning with a triple down the first base line. Brandon Roberts followed with an RBI single off of Bryan Hansen's glove at first which scored Casilla to tie the game at three. Brock Peterson then slugged an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall, his eighth of the season, giving the Miracle a 5-3 lead.
The Miracle added two insurance runs in the eighth when, with one out, Arneson was hit by a pitch, stole second and with two outs scored on Casilla's single to right. Roberts then struck out, but the ball skipped away from catcher Tuffy Gosewisch who's throw to first went into right field and allowed Casilla to score.
J.P. Martinez finished off the game by going two innings of hitless baseball while walking two and striking out two in picking up his 11th save of the season.
The Miracle go for the series sweep Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Justin Jones (1-1, 2.70) to the hill against Threshers RHP Kyle Kendrick (2-4, 4.81). It is Hurricane Awareness Night at the ballpark. Items being given away include generators, radios, flashlights, plywood, batteries and much more. It is also Scrubs night, a salute to the health care industry.
