Miracle outlast resilient Stone Crabs in ten innings

PORT CHARLOTTE -- It took ten innings, but the Fort Myers Miracle held on to take a 5-3 victory over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Saturday night at Charlotte Sports Park.

The Miracle scored two runs in the tenth inning as Stone Crabs reliever Kevin Boggan (2-4) struggled through a rare bout of wildness. Having walked only 11 all season, the righty issued four free passes, including walking in a run in the tenth, to take the loss. He gave up two earned on two hits and didn't strike out a batter.

Fort Myers sent eight to the plate against him in the tenth. The first run scored as Boggan threw wide of first base on a Benson bunt attempt for an error. Jair Fernandez drew a bases-loaded walk for an RBI. The Miracle had a shot at more with the bases still loaded and no one out. Nick Romero hit a soft, shallow fly to left field. Joe Benson sprinted from third after tagging, but was out by a couple feet after a throw from Omar Luna.

Joe Testa (4-0) blew a save but got the win. He gave up one in two innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Blair Erickson allowed a hit but nothing else for his fourteenth save in the bottom of the tenth inning.

Miracle starter Mike Tarsi had a no-hitter after four innings, only to lose it on a leadoff double from Mike McCormick. Tarsi used his best stuff since joining the Miracle to limit his opponents to just two earned runs on three hits in seven innings. He walked three and fanned six.

Meanwhile, David Newmann tied a career high with nine strikeouts in his six innings. He didn't walk a batter and gave up one earned run, two total, on six hits.

The two teams played what was at times a very sloppy game, with nine combined errors (five by Fort Myers).

Third baseman Shawn Williams tied the game twice with two outs for the Stone Crabs, as he drove in all three runs for the hosts. He had three doubles in five at-bats. All three doubles came with two outs in their respective innings.

The finale of the regular season between the two rivals will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Brian Flores will oppose David Bromberg.
