Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (July 26, 2012) - Tom Stuifbergen put together his best performance of the season to help the Fort Myers Miracle beat the Brevard County Manatees 4-3 at Hammond Stadium on Thursday.
Stuifbergen pitched 7 1/3, allowed two runs on five hits and struck out seven. He got the win to improve to 4-3.
The Miracle scored all four of their runs in the fourth off of starter Brandon Williamson and that proved to be enough.
Josmil Pinto started the scoring by blasting his eighth home run of the year to left-center field to put Fort Myers up 1-0.
Anderson Hidalgo launched a ball deep to left for a sac fly that plated Steve Liddle for a 2-0 lead, and Daniel Santana delivered the big blow in the inning by lacing a two-run triple over Reggie Keen's head in deep center to make it 4-0.
Stuifbergen stifled the Manatees through seven innings. Over the first seven innings he allowed just two singles while striking out seven. However, he ran into trouble in the eighth. Cody Hawn and Hector Gomez started the frame with back-to-back doubles, and after a line out, John Dishon singled through the right side of the infield to cut the Miracle lead to 4-2 and chase Stuifbergen from the game.
Miguel Munoz quieted the rally by getting two ground ball outs to end the inning.
Munoz gave up leadoff double to Jason Rogers in the ninth and Rogers scored on a ground out, but Munoz closed out the game by getting Hawn to ground to first.
Williamson dropped his record to 2-8. He settled down after the second and lasted six innings, allowing five walks and four runs.
The Miracle (45-57, 17-18) and Manatees (48-54, 19-15) will meet in game 2 of their four-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. It will be Dog Daze at Hammond Stadium so fans are invited to bring their dogs out to the park.
Join Brice Zimmerman and Adam MacDonald for the broadcast on www.miraclebaseball.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
