Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 9, 2013) - A trio of Fort Myers' pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout as the Miracle defeated the Jupiter Hammerheads 1-0 on Tuesday at Hammond Stadium.
In his first professional start, DJ Baxendale was electric for the Miracle, striking out eight Hammerheads in just 5 1/3 innings. He gave up just two hits and earned the win.
Zack Jones pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to pick up his second save and clinch a 5-0 start to the season for Fort Myers.
The lone run of the ballgame came in the first inning when Twins top prospect Miguel Sano blasted a two-out home run over the left field wall off of Jose Urena. It was Sano's first home run and RBI of the season.
The home run held up thanks to Baxendale, Cole Johnson and Jones. Baxendale gave up a leadoff double to Ryan Fisher in the third but recorded a pop out and two flyouts to strand Fisher.
Baxendale struck out the side in the third and followed it up in the fourth with two more strikeouts. He left the game after getting Isaac Galloway to popout in the sixth.
Johnson was able to get out of a jam later in the sixth when he retired Wilfredo Gimenez on strikes and Fisher on a lineout with the tying run at second.
Jones got Gimenez to ground out to end the eighth with the tying run on second and induced a 4-6-3 double play in the ninth to end the game.
Urena took the loss despite allowing just one run and three hits in six innings. He struck out seven.
The Miracle (5-0) and Hammerheads (0-5) resume their three-game series at Hammond Stadium on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Join Brice Zimmerman and Adam MacDonald for the broadcast and the Square One Burgers and Bar Pregame Show on miraclebaseball.com at 6:45 p.m.
