Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (May 31, 2006) - Zero, zilch, nada, nothing. How many different ways can the Fort Myers Miracle pitching staff say the word shutout? They're beginning to find out as they blanked the Sarasota Reds for the third consecutive game, 5-0 at Hammond Stadium on Wednesday night earning their 999th victory in Fort Myers franchise history.
The Miracle pitching staff has now gone 29 consecutive innings without giving up a run and on Wednesday night it was Anthony Swarzak's turn in the rotation to keep up the goose eggs. He had his best performance of the season going 6.0 shutout innings allowing two hits, the only two hits the Reds had all night, while walking two and striking out eight. The only hits he gave up was a one out single to Paul Janish in the first and a one out single to Paul Roberts in the third. That was the only inning he ran into trouble when the Reds loaded the bases on two walks and a single, but Swarzak got Jay Garthwaite to hit a soft liner to second baseman Alexi Casilla to end the inning. Swarzak retired the last 10 batters he faced and Miracle pitchers retired 17 in a row at one point before J.P. Martinez walked Janish with one out in the ninth.
The Miracle, who improved to 31-21 and are now tied for first with the Dunedin Blue Jays in the Western Division, got on the board in the first inning. Alexi Casilla singled to left to lead off the game. He advanced to second when catcher John Purdom's pick off throw went into right field and scored on Brock Peterson's single to right.
The Miracle made it 2-0 in the sixth when they loaded the bases on a walk to Peterson and Jeremy Pickrel and Trevor Plouffe lined a single off of pitcher Abe Woody. Luke Hughes' sacrifice fly scored Peterson.
The Miracle finished their scoring with a three run seventh when Matt Tolbert singled with two outs. He moved to third on a single by Guzman and then scored on a wild pitch. Peterson followed with a walk and Pickrel drove home two with a two run triple.
Two Miracle relievers combined for the shutout. Ryan Callahan worked a perfect seventh and Martinez walked one and struck out six in two innings.
The Miracle are now one shutout shy of the FSL record of four set by five teams, last done by the Tampa Yankees in 1994.
The Miracle head to Jackie Robinson Ballpark to take on the Daytona Cubs at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday. The Miracle send RHP Kevin Slowey (2-1, 1.48) to the hill.
