Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
DUNEDIN, Fla. - The Dunedin Blue Jays erased a three-run deficit to defeat the Fort Myers Miracle, 5-3, at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Miracle struck first in the third inning. Tanner Witt led off with a single into center field off Dunedin starter Kyle Westwood. Brian Navarreto then poked a hit through the left side. With runners at first and second, Chad Christensen laid down a sacrifice bunt. Logan Wade then drove in Witt with an RBI ground out to second, 1-0.
Max Murphy added to the Miracle lead in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Edgar Corcino reached on a walk after a borderline full count pitch from Westwood was called ball four. After Corcino stole second base, Murphy skied a 2-2 pitch that bounced off the wall in left center field and eluded a leaping D.J. Davis. The ball ricocheted back towards the infield. Corcino trotted home while Miracle manager Jeff Smith vigorously waved Murphy around third base. Murphy dove head first to complete a two-run inside the park homer and put the Miracle up 4-0. The home run was Murphy's fourth of the season.
Dunedin rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off Miracle starter Keaton Steele. After five scoreless frames, Steele (1-4) had retired eight in a row before issuing a lead-off walk to Jason Leblebijian. Ryan McBroom followed with a single. Then, Anthony Alford sliced a 2-0 pitch into the gap in right center field to score two with a double. Steele rallied to get Davis on a grounder to first while Alford moved to third, then Dickie Joe Thon was retired on a liner back to the pitcher.
With two outs, L.B. Dantzler doubled in Alford with a drive into the right field corner. Mike Reeves followed with an RBI single that put the D-Jays on top, 4-3. Steele was finished after six innings while surrendering four runs on 10 hits with a walk and two punch outs.
The Blue Jays added an insurance run in the seventh when Alford knocked in his third run of the night on a single off Miracle reliever Yorman Landa, 5-3.
Dunedin starter Kyle Westwood received a no decision after giving up three runs on four hits. Reliever Conor Fisk took over in the sixth and tossed two perfect innings. Fisk (2-0) earned the victory. Carlos Ramirez inherited a bases loaded and one out scenario in the ninth, but retired the final two outs to earn his fourth save of the season.
The Miracle (22-18) finish up a seven-game road trip with the fourth and final game in the Dunedin (17-23) series on Thursday night. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. and will feature Felix Jorge (2-3) on the mound for the Miracle opposite Justin Shafer (0-1) for the D-Jays. Fans can listen to the play-by-play action with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman beginning with the MiracleBaseball.com pregame show at 6:10 p.m.
