Miracle and Mets Suspended in Fifth Inning

FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 26, 2014) - Thursday evening's game between the Fort Myers Miracle and St. Lucie Mets was suspended with one out in the top of the fifth and the Miracle leading 3-2. The delay was initially due to lightning, but a heavy rain storm prevented play from resuming at Hammond Stadium.

The game will be completed through nine innings as part of a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m. on Friday. The second game will begin approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the first game and is slated for seven innings. Fans with tickets from Thursday's game can attend Friday's game or exchange them for any other non-fireworks Miracle game for the 2014 season. Exchanges can be made at the Hammond Stadium ticket office.

Thursday's scheduled Used Car Giveaway of a 1996 Grand Prix has been rescheduled for Saturday evening after a 7:05 p.m. game with the Palm Beach Cardinals.

On Friday, the Miracle will be giving away a Ghostbusters Mini-Bobblehead to the first 500 fans that come through the Hammond Stadium gates beginning at 4 p.m. For questions or information, call the Miracle offices at (239) 768-4210 or visit www.miraclebaseball.com.

Prior to the rain, the St. Lucie Mets capitalized on a Miracle error to score the first run of the game in the second inning. Gavin Cecchini led off with a double into left field off Miracle starter Tim Shibuya. Maikis De La Cruz then flew out to right field deep enough to move Cecchini to third. After getting Jeff McNeil to tap right back to him for an easy out, Shibuya should have been out of the inning when Eudy Pina hit a chopper to third. Tyler Grimes fielded cleanly, but threw wide of the bag at first for an error that allowed Cecchini to score, 1-0.

The Miracle answered with a three-run, four-hit inning off Mets starter Cory Mazzoni in the bottom of the second. Dalton Hicks singled into left field, Stuart Turner walked and Max Kepler picked up a base hit to load the bases. Grimes then hit a grounder to short. Cecchini threw out Turner at third while Hicks scored to tie the game, 1-1.

On a 1-1 pitch, Aderling Mejia launched a double into right center field to score Kepler, but Grimes was thrown out at the plate. Moving to third on throw, Mejia trotted home on a two-out, RBI hit from Niko Goodrum to give the Miracle a 3-1 lead.

The Mets picked up a run on a solo homer from Eudy Pina right before the rain delay in the top of the fifth inning. Pina lifted a 1-2 pitch from Shibuya onto the grass berm in left field to cut the Miracle lead to 3-2. With L.J. Mazzilli at the plate in a 1-2 count with one out, a nearby lightning strike pulled the players off the field and the rains came shortly afterwards.
