Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - Jimmy Reed was terrific in his Florida State League debut and the Palm Beach Cardinals defeated the Charlotte Stone Crabs 7-3 on Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cardinals have won nine of their last 10 games and 17 of 20 overall dating back to June 3.
Reed, who was called up from Low-A Peoria on June 25, tossed 6.2 innings, allowed two runs on seven hits, walked one and fanned four in his debut with Palm Beach. The lefty kept the Stone Crabs off the board for the first four innings before allowing a run in the fifth and a solo home run to Patrick Leonard in the sixth.
Reed (1-0) left the game with a 7-2 lead and Sam Tuivailala and Iden Nazario came on in relief to preserve the win for the 23-year-old.
Nazario pitched a perfect ninth inning to finish the game. He has allowed just one run in his last 23.1 innings pitched spanning 16 games for a 0.39 ERA.
The Cardinals (7-1, 43-34) struck first with three runs in the third inning. Dante Rosenberg and Charlie Tilson each got on board with infield singles and Ildemaro Vargas drove home the first run with an RBI groundout. Bruce Caldwell followed with an RBI double to right field and Luke Voit capped the inning with an RBI single to the gap in right-center to plate Caldwell.
Palm Beach wasted little time expanding the 3-0 lead to a 7-0 advantage with four more runs in the fourth inning. The Birds loaded the bases against Charlotte starter Reinaldo Lopez with nobody out in the inning. Nick Martini and Anthony Garcia drew walks and Jimmy Bosco singled to shallow center field to create the traffic jam.
Rosenberg stepped to the plate and drove in Martini with his second hit of the night - a bloop single into right field - to make it 4-0 in favor of Palm Beach. Vargas laced a two-run single into right and Caldwell recorded an RBI groundout to make it a 7-0 lead.
Vargas tied a season-high with three runs driven in on the night while Caldwell plated two.
Lopez (4-3) took the loss for the Stone Crabs (0-8, 31-44) after allowing a season-high seven earned runs over 3.1 innings.
The Cardinals and Crabs will wrap up the three-game set on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. Palm Beach will send LH Kyle Helisek (4-2, 2.45) to the mound to face RH Leonel Santiago (1-6, 6.11) for Charlotte. The game will be broadcast live on PalmBeachCardinals.com.
