MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Premier League of America (PLA) today announced a new team for the 2016 season. The PLA has accepted Minnesota United Reserves as an expansion team to join the league and play in Minneapolis.

"We are excited to continue building our vision of what our Reserve Team can be," said Minnesota United Sporting Director Manny Lagos. "Playing against the competition in the Premier League of America will give us the opportunity to continue to develop players and improve our connections throughout the soccer community."

The PLA, which grew out of the former Great Lakes Premier League, fielded five teams during the 2015 season. The addition of Minnesota United will bring the league count to 10 teams in 2016. The current league teams are located across five Midwestern states, including Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

"Our goal in 2016 is to create a strong regional soccer league with a national focus," said PLA President Peter Schinkai. "Very few teams in the country are as well tied to these ideals as Minnesota United. A club that was a huge success in the National Premier Soccer League, we are excited to have them become a member of the PLA."

Minnesota United Reserves took the field for the first time in 2014, playing in the Central Conference of the NPSL Midwest Region. The team, which plays it's home matches at East Ridge High School in Woodbury, MN, has been very successful in its first two years, having finishing second in its conference and reaching the Regional Semifinals.

Minnesota United's first team plays in the North American Soccer League (NASL) and will be moving to Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2017 or 2018. United recently announced its plans to build a brand new soccer specific stadium in St. Paul, MN, which will open in 2018.
